At the latest Chester Clandestine Cake Club (CCC) the theme was “Mystery Ingredient”! How exciting! I could just tell we were going to get some weird and wonderful creations! Well, actually they weren’t all that weird after all – apart from my cake… haha!
I immediately knew what I was going to make for this theme – a white chocolate and wasabi cake topped with salted caramel. Obviously I would never have thought of it by myself, I got the recipe from Marian Keyes’ new book “Saved By Cake” (which is fab by the way!). She had made cupcakes, but I used the same quantity of the ingredients and made a loaf cake.
The salted caramel was very, very salty! I do like a bit of salt on my food, but this was almost too much for me! The cake itself was actually quite pleasant, no-body guessed that there was wasabi in it! I don’t think it would be an everyday bake though!
We had fun tasting all the cakes first and then trying to guess the mystery ingredient! Some of the cakes we had were: a lemon cake (made with potato!) which was sooo lovely & moist, a Coca-Cola cake, a chocolate mayonnaise cake, a camomile tea cake, a lemon & saffron cake and a Moroccan-inspired lime & rosewater yogurt cake!
I forgot to take a proper pic of my cake, but it is the loaf shaped one with the gold stars on top!
There won’t be any more Chester CCC for a while as Zoe the organiser is having a baby (she is probably having it as I type this!). BUT….
…. After complaining that there was no CCC’s in my town and having to travel to Warrington & Chester for my cake fixes, I have set up a Runcorn & Widnes CCC! Our first event will be Monday 30th July at 7pm in a secret location in Runcorn town centre! The theme is “Inherited Indulgences” – so any lovely cakes that you remember your mum or granny making, we want you to resurrect them and make them to share with us! I’m so excited!
If you fancy coming along check out our page.

Oh, my! So many awesome looking cakes! Can I have a slice of each, please? Haha!
And wow, I'd have never thought of pairing chocolate and wasabi! :O
Hope your week's off to a great start! ;D
Miki.
Ooh, I love chocolate and wasabi as a combo. I'm not normally a fan of white chocolate but I would definitely try that.
What a great spread! Your wasabi cake sounds great…definitely an unusual mystery ingredient!! Good luck with your new CCC!!!
A wasabi cake?! My mind is officially blown! Bit more rebellious than peanut butter : ) So nice to see what other CCCs are up to lots of luck with starting your own x
That's an incredible spread! I am tempted to start a CCC in my neck of the woods because we don't have one!
Oh wow your cake looks great! and I love the idea of the salted caramel on top! Good work for setting up your own club! I'm intrigued as to where you got the Key Lime Pie dessert from you said you were eating when you commented on my post? or was it homemade? I haven't ever found any tasty ones to buy here so if you know of one I would love to know because Key Lime Pie is my fave!!
I saw a Key Lime Pie in Sainsbury's today if that helps! : )
So glad you set up your own – that is excellent!
They all look yummy! Can't wait for the first Runcorn meet
