I can’t believe it is July already and we are still having rain nearly every day….
! Anyway, I enjoyed some good books during June. Here they are:
The Colour Purple by Alice Walker
Source – Recommended as someone’s favourite ever book on Twitter! This was a good wee read. I can’t believe it was written so long ago – 1982. It told the story of a young black woman growing up in America in the 1930′s and the poverty and abuse which she experiences. The book is written as a series of letters which annoyed me a bit. I found out after I read it that it is one of the most challenged books because of it’s explicit violent content. I don’t remember it being that bad to be honest! Has anyone else read this? What did you think? 3/5
The Chocolate Run by Drothy Koomson
Source – lent by Kim! I am becoming quite addicted to books by this author! Saying that, this book wasn’t as good as the previous ones I have read. I started off thinking it was just a rubbishy chick-lit raunchy romance book but there are actually some deep underlying themes in the book, and I enjoyed the ending. 3/5
The Snowman by Jo Nesbo
Source – lent by Sarah. Again, I have been reading all of these Harry Hole thrillers in the last few months. I really enjoyed this book. It kept me guessing, had good twists and of course I loved finding out more about the regular characters. Can’t wait to read the next book in the series! 4/5
Meet Me At The Cupcake Cafe by Jenny Colgan
Source – lent by Kim. I knew I would love this book by the title and the cute cover alone! It was a pretty predictable story but I just loved it because it was all about baking and setting up a cupcake business (my dream!). There were also some recipes scattered through the book – which I meant to write down to try them but I forgot…:( Kim, you will have to lend me the book again haha! PS Have just seen there is a sequel coming out soon “Christmas At The Cupcake Cafe” – yay!! 4/5
Book of the month – I declare it a tie-break between Meet Me At The Cupcake Cafe for it’s loveliness and The Snowman for it’s grittiness!
Book of the year so far – The Hunger Games
